Back in the early 1980s, when Lonesome Dove won Larry McMurtry a Pulitzer and he was all the rage, he observed that all his novels about the west--and for that matter most western literature and films--had the same subject: the end of the west. He meant that westerns picked up the story of the American frontier just as the frontier was being closed, and most particularly when the people, mostly men, who had tamed it were being phased out by peaceful, law-abiding society. All of the earmarks of the western movie--the gunplay, the riding, the strong hero with a code of honor, the extermination of what are now called Native Americans--were shown to be no longer necessary in the course of most westerns, and the departure of the hero in one form or another (death, moving on, retirement) was how things customarily ended.
I find it hard to disagree with this assessment, and when I put together a list of what I regard as the best westerns, they all fit snugly into this category. There are eleven of them, and when listed chronologically (as they are below), the genre itself is pretty definitively eliminated with number ten, 1969's The Wild Bunch. Peckinpah's film has always polarized people, but I think that's because he set out to explode every--and I mean every--one of the sustaining myths of the western. From the opening sequence of the children tormenting the scorpion (lifted from Clouzot's The Wages of Fear [1953]) through every distinct group of humans encountered, we find greed, savagery, stupidity, at the best massive illusion. Some viewers have complained about the sequence when the Bunch, after pulling themselves together with Angel's "people," leave the encampment to highly sentimentalized music and lighting, but given who the Bunch are, and given the behavior we see of Mexicans in general thereafter, that turns out to be something of a sour joke. It's all blood and thievery and exploitation and there's not much left in the way of heroism by the end. There are I suppose those who find the Bunch's flame-out at the end somehow glorious; it's always seemed to me that they knew their time was at an end, and decided to butcher as many as they could while going out, not perhaps the ultimate heroic ideal.
The film is of course flawlessly shot, edited, and acted. William Holden had to wait until his early fifties for a role that he could fulfill perfectly, and of course Robert Ryan was always wonderful in an ambivalent role. Warren Oates and Ben Johnson seem to have been Lyle and Tector Gorch in some previous life, and among the bounty hunters Peckinpah regulars Strother Martin and L.Q. Jones set the standard, yet to be exceeded, for the redneck peckerwood. In sum, The Wild Bunch so exploded the western from within that there was no bringing it back, though Eastwood made a try probably worth making in Unforgiven (1992).
I tried to be severe in making this list. I had no trouble leaving off Dances with Wolves or The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, squirmed a little about the several Anthony Mann-James Stewart collaborations that began with Winchester '73 (1950)--good but not great, the man here says--and will admit to nagging doubts about High Noon and Shane. Perhaps it's just sentimental attachments from my teen-age years. But if Red River can get in with that hoked-up happy ending, the faults of these two are no greater. Anyway, you know where to complain.

Maybe it's just my sentimental attachment to it but my favorite film of the Cavalry trilogy is She Wore A Yellow Ribbon. I find it the most poetic, casually quotidian and lyrical of the three films.
And I realize it's not American-made but I would add a Sergio Leone film.

My problem with The Wild Bunch is just how badly it's been dated. I've been exposed to so many unlikeable antiheroes in various genre deconstructions that its ideas are no longer revolutionary, and since The Wild Bunch is so utterly devoid of any trace of humanity, all you're left with as a very long movie about people acting very nastily. Thanks, but I'll stick to my Cormac McCarthy novels.
Anyways, I could be a really snarky bastard right now and point out that El Topo is noticeably absent from that list...

Well, I'm afraid that High Noon and Rio Bravo--Hawks's "answer" to Noon--could not exist on the same list without a shootout, or at the very least duelling ballads.
I hate trying to whittle down a list, having to remove one great and unique film after another. I'd certainly replace High Noon with Man Of The West, cut Shane and Unforgiven, and knock off a Ford or two.
In place of them I'd be forced to choose between too many others: I'd feel compelled to include a Tourneur, a Mann, a DeToth, and a Walsh. And shouldn't there be room for The Lusty Men?

Great timing. Yesterday I watched My Darling Clementine for the first time, and I think I'm finally beginning to climb out of my anti-Western bias. Except for the awkward shifts in tone every time one of the female leades enters a scene, that is a damn fine film. I never thought I would so enjoy a Henry Fonda performance.
I enjoyed your opening comments about the end of the west. That is definitely what most attracts me to these films, and I think it's also why I have a soft spot for The Misfits, which is such a mess in some respects, and so tragic and beautiful in others.

Only one major disagreement with the list - High Noon. As you know, Hawks made Rio Bravo partly as a reponse to High Noon, and I fall solidly on the Rio Bravo side of things on the subject of getting townspeople to help. Couple of things that bugged me about HIgh Noon - the overwrought score from Tiomkin I think it is, the whiny wife, and the borderline whiny sheriff.
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence is not only a favorite western of mine, its an all time favorite movie of any genre, only problem is the 2 main actors being far too old for the roles they played, but its great movie with some serious themes. Other thoughts - Yellow Sky is I think an underappreciated little film, and I like The Big Country more each time I see it, it would be a top ten western of mine. Glad to see Ride the HIgh Country on the list, I consider it a minor masterpiece of a movie.

Stagecoach? Cmon, its day is over. Give me Wagonmaster any time. Even as an admirer of Ford and Wayne, enough already. You need Rio Bravo and maybe El Dorado too. (A shoot out between John T Chance and Will Kane would only leave one man standing, sorry Coop.) If you won't have Mann/Stewart then Once Upon a Time in the West. I like McCabe. Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. And The Long Riders seems to me a perfect distillation of the poetry of the West, and one of the great underrated movies.

Yellow Sky has an interesting if arty final "shootout", but wouldn't make my "Best Western" list. The Big Country? How about the Bloated Country? I'm not too fond of Shane either, as it suffers from the same straining for epic status, but I'd take it's quick resoution of tension after a long slow build over the protracted fight in Country.

Lots of good comments--thanks. I could not see my way clear to putting "Rio Bravo" on the list for several reasons: rickety plot, Walter Brennan doing a burlesque of his usual caricature of the comic sidekick, the (very) low humor of Gonzales Gonzales's ethnic stereotype, Dean Martin (who of all people should have been convincing playing a drunk), and--worst of all--Ricky Nelson and his hysterical bow-legged strut as the two-gun Colorado Ryan. If he could have convinced me he knew which end of the .44 to put in his hand, I might have thought better of the picture.
"Once Upon a Time in the West" is a favorite, like "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly," mostly because I like Fonda cast against type, but Leone overdoes everything (with the possible exception of that wonderful opening with Jack Elam and the fly). I have a friend who says he pictures Leone on the set interrupting take after take and yelling, "I want more. MORE. Give me EXCESS." He always got it.
"High Noon" and "Shane" are admittedly tough to defend, but they still vibrate my tuning fork; but the point it well taken. I liked almost everything else mentioned, with the exception of "The Big Country," "The Long Riders," and of course "Liberty Valance." My list is long on Ford as a list on the 19th century novel would be long on Tolstoy and Dickens; no apologies.

Hey, neat list. My three cents: I think High Noon is grossly overrated; but Shane is a sentimental favorite that I can't shake off. I'd vote for The Long Riders too.
Ford drives me crazy, frankly. Too much hokum. The Searchers would have been some kind of masterpeice - which it ain't - if he'd snipped all the rowdy play. It's just too stupid. And the cavalry movies leave me cold. Guess that's just my taste. On the other hand, I don't think you can fault Stagecoach, which is the blueprint for countless westerns.
I'd definitely include The Tall T by Budd Boetticher and Randolph Scott.
