NOTICE

We, his family, are sad to tell you that George Fasel died Wednesday evening, August 17, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.  He was 67.

We want you to know that George considered this blog and you -- the community which responded from around the world -- as one of the best parts of a long and successful career as writer, historian, professor, film critic, financial PR executive, and now, blogger.

We will continue to maintain the site and will be posting tributes from his family and friends.  We will answer or post as many of your comments in his memory as we can.

George relied on the Film Forum in New York City, www.filmforum.org, to see hard-to-find films and films which he thought were still best seen the old way.  Contributions can be made in his memory to support this resource.

If you would like to make a contribution, you can send a check, payable to The Moving Image, to:  Film Forum 209 West Houston Street;  New York, New York, 10014, Attn. Sonya.  Please write In Memory of George Fasel on the front of the check so that your gift can be recognized as such.

Ruth, his wife.

I feel bereft. I had only recently discovered George's site. I devoured his archives, delighted to discover such refined taste and elegant writing.

My deepest and most heartfelt condolences.

A great loss. I had come to admire the outstanding insight Mr. Fasel brought to a wide variety of film during the six months in which I'd been reading.

Condolences.

A truly sad event.

The discussions here were always smart and invigorating.

Mr Fasel will be missed.

My sincerest condolences.

I'm deeply saddened to hear we've lost such an insightful, astute and knowledgeable voice. My condolences as well.

I am so deeply saddened by this news. As a huge film buff, I was looking forward to posting on George's blog, as I found his insight on films both conceptually profound and encyclopedically impressive. My deepest condolences.

My deepest condolences. From the moment I started reading George's blog I enjoyed it more than any other. He was always so warm in his responses to my emails. He will be missed even by those touched merely through the computer screen.

Our most sincere condolences.
This is heartbreaking news.

I'm so sorry to hear about George. His blog was one of my favorites and I always read his posts with excitement and delight. It was a way for me to go the movies with a smart and knowledgeable friend. I will miss his work and his presence.

My deepest sympathy to all his family and friends.

I'm stunned. Oh, Ruth, you and yours have my deepest sympathy. If there is anything I can do to help, merely say the word.

My heartfelt condolences. I loved reading his work.

As saddened as I am to hear of George's passing, I'm also feeling strangely inspired and encouraged by his example. If this site is a reliable indication, he was clearly a man of great curiosity, humor, and generosity of spirit. I just can't get over the fact that, throughout the time George and I have been corresponding, he was fighting for his life.

Ruth, please know that you and your family are in my thoughts.

My condolences to his family and friends. I never knew George, but I deeply enjoyed reading his passionate reflections on cinema.

My deepest sympathies to you. Your husband's reflections were such a pleasure to read--sincere, informed, and impassioned. He will certainly be missed.

I just discovered this blog today. My condolences to you, Ruth, and the rest of the family.

My sympathies to the family. Thank you, George.

I was devastated to hear about George's passing. My deepest sympathies to the family.

I've been reading through the many emails I received from him in the past year and a half -- the breadth of his knowledge (matched equally with the depth of his passion) was a huge source of inspiration for many of us. He will be missed.

as a friend of film and anything that is moving, i am deeply sadden. my utmost condolences.

my deepest sympathies. george's great love and knowledge of film will be hugely missed.

Requiescat in pace.

In deepest sympathy.

I'm so sad to hear this. This site was a model of eloquence, grace, generosity, and love of good movies and good writing. My deepest sympathies to all who had the opportunity to know him.

My sincere condolences. This is sad news. I hadn't been reading George's blog for very long, but immediately knew right away that it was of the highest quality, and came from someone who was undoubtedly thoughtful and passionate. His relatively recent piece on Bergman was amazing, as was everything he wrote. He will undoubtedly be missed.

George was my favorite blog writer. I'll miss him much.

My sincerest condolences.

George was a hell of a film writer, and I'll miss his insights.

my condolences.
